Read on and treat yourself to a healthy shawarma sandwich.

Healthy and delicious shawarma salad recipe explained

Ingredients for shawarma salad (2 people)

For this shawarma salad, you will need the following ingredients.

  • 300 grams of chicken shawarma

  • arugula salad mix

  • 1 bell pepper

  • cucumber

  • cherry tomatoes

  • spring onion

  • hummus

  • feta

  • low-fat quark (or lactose-free quark/soy yogurt)

  • garlic powder

  • parsley

  • 1 whole grain cracker or spelt pita bread

How to make the shawarma salad

  1. Cook the chicken shawarma in a pan until done. Pre-cooked chicken shawarma is quick and easy to prepare. But if you have a bit more time, you can make crispy oven-baked chicken shawarma yourself. It may seem to take more time, but the result is more than worth it.

  2. In the meantime, put a generous amount of salad in a bowl.

  3. Chop the cherry tomatoes, bell pepper, cucumber, and spring onion into pieces and add them to the salad.

  4. Meanwhile, mix some low-fat quark with water and season with garlic powder, pepper, salt, and parsley. By making it yourself with quark as a base and diluting it with water, you get the delicious taste of garlic sauce but it's less unhealthy.

  5. Remove the shawarma from the heat and let it cool for a moment.

  6. Meanwhile, crush or crumble a whole grain cracker to make croutons. If you have more time, you can toast a piece of bread, cut it into small pieces, drizzle with some olive oil, and roast it in the oven for 10 minutes.

  7. Add the shawarma strips to the salad, crumble some feta on top, and season with the dressing and croutons. Optional: serve with a scoop of hummus.
