What is the influence of eating eggs on protein production and muscle growth?

In this article about the influence of eating eggs on protein production and muscle growth: It's almost Easter! Stores have been filled with eggs for months, especially chocolate ones, which come in forty varieties and sizes. But breakfast and brunch recipes are also bombarding us through every advertising channel. A perfect moment to explore more about the impact of consuming eggs on our bodies. Studies regarding protein consumption mainly focus on the effect of supplements like protein powder. However, we actually get the largest amount of protein from our daily diet. How does our body process that protein and how does it relate to training? We investigated.

What is the influence of eating eggs on protein production and muscle growth explained

Protein consumption and protein synthesis

We consume protein daily from our diet. Foods that are high in protein include quark, eggs, chicken, and fish. Naturally, our body processes protein through protein synthesis. This is the process by which biological cells produce proteins. Protein synthesis is influenced by the amount of protein you consume as well as the training damage to the muscle cells. When you damage your muscles during training, the body repairs them through protein synthesis. This allows muscle fibers to grow. Additionally, it aids in muscle recovery, which is useful for preventing injuries. This process is also known as muscle protein synthesis (MPS) and is an interesting process to investigate in relation to the type of protein consumption and training.

Muscle growth and egg consumption

Research on the effect of protein consumption on muscle growth often focuses on the influence of isolated supplements (pure proteins) like protein powder. However, we get most of our protein from our daily diet. In an attempt to fill this research gap, studies have been conducted on the difference in protein consumption from whole eggs (yolk and white) versus just the egg white (isolated) on MPS. One group consumed protein through whole eggs, while the other group consumed only the egg white. Both portions contained the same amount of protein. After strength training, the increase in MPS was tested in both groups over five hours. The MPS was significantly higher, by 42%, for the group that consumed whole eggs compared to the group that consumed only the egg white.

What does this study actually say?

This research offers an interesting insight regarding protein consumption from our daily diet. The consumption of whole eggs has a greater influence on muscle protein synthesis than when you consume only the egg white. However, as with any study, there are also caveats. The research only shows that MPS is higher after consumption and training, but does not measure actual muscle growth. Muscle growth is a logical consequence of increased MPS, but cannot be definitively stated based on this study. Additionally, this study does not reveal the underlying reason why synthesis is higher for the consumption of whole eggs than for just the egg white. It may also be interesting to investigate the difference in synthesis between the consumption of protein powder (isolated protein) and whole eggs (protein and yolk). More research is needed to clarify this.

It is certainly an interesting fact that the consumption of protein from our daily diet has a positive effect on our protein synthesis. Those eggs, the real ones not the chocolate ones, can therefore be eaten with peace of mind during Easter. And if you then throw in a good strength training, you not only burn off that brunch but may also increase your chances of muscle growth ;-).
