How to become a personal trainer?

Are you also trying to convince your family to adopt healthy habits? That they should start exercising and choose water instead of soda? If I had to take a guess, I would say you have a passion for fitness and enjoy helping others. Maybe becoming a personal trainer is something for you. But, how do you become a personal trainer?

How to Become a Personal Trainer Explained

Let me explain that to you.

Determine Your ‘Why’

You cannot give everyone who walks into the gym for the first time the same program. You first need to know why they are entering the gym. Are they training for a marathon? Do they want to build muscle mass? Without knowing this, the chance is small that a standard program is suitable.

The same goes for yourself. Before you start as a personal trainer, it is important to determine your “why.” You can only become a good personal trainer if you truly have a passion for helping others. Trainers who do it just for the money will often find themselves struggling quickly.

Personal Trainer Education

You cannot just start training because you have watched a few YouTube videos and look good yourself. Personal training goes beyond that. You need to present yourself professionally. The first step is to follow a training course. In this profession, Fitness Trainer A is a requirement.

Here you learn the basics of anatomy, physiology, training theory, and nutrition. You learn how everything in the body works together and how to apply that during your training sessions. After this education, you can safely guide people through basic exercises.

A Personal Training Follow-Up Course

To really get started, it is helpful to follow the Fitness Trainer B course. Here you build on the knowledge you gained during Fitness Trainer A. You learn advanced training and coaching techniques. After this course, you will be able to guide people towards their specific goals. Not only do you now know what to tell your clients, but also how to tell them so they understand and can use it.

Additionally, there are various advanced courses and training that greatly contribute to your knowledge and experience as a personal trainer. For instance, I have personally taken several courses with Overload Worldwide, such as T.O.P. Trainer and Mylogenics.

Follow a Personal Training Internship

Interning is an essential part if you want to become a good personal trainer. You only really learn to train when you gain experience in practice. By interning with an experienced personal trainer, you acquire knowledge that you can use to successfully guide your own clients. An internship is the fastest way to grow as a personal trainer. Here you will discover your talents and passions.

Costs of personal trainer training

But what are the costs of a Personal Trainer training? This is a question many people have before they enroll in a course. The costs can vary depending on the institution you enroll in and the training you choose. But rest assured, investing in your future as a Personal Trainer is definitely worth it! So don't see it as costs, you actually get something in return. That makes it an investment.

Additionally, in some cases, the STAP-Budget is available, making a personal trainer training even more accessible. At the time of writing, the STAP-Budget is still available. There are plans to adjust this in the future.

Choose your specialization and keep growing

Personal trainers have various specializations. Some focus on weight loss, others on strength training, and others on sports performance or pregnant women. Choose a specialization that fits your interests and talents. But remember, it's not just knowledge you need. It also requires specific skills such as communication, motivation, and coaching. The people you work with often have insecurities, and it's important that you handle this professionally as a personal trainer. It's essential to develop these skills through gaining experience.

See? The step to becoming a personal trainer isn't that big after all. If you have a passion for what you do, it's the best investment you can make. In this profession, you give meaning to your passion by helping others become healthier. Follow these steps, develop your skills, and make an impact in the lives of others!
